Freelance, employment or business: how to tell what suits you

The right work format depends on your values as much as on your skills. What freelance, employment and your own business each offer, and a short exercise to see which fits you.

Choosing a professional path as an adult is rarely easy. Some people think about moving from employment to freelance, others about starting their own business. How do you know what really suits you? The answer lies in your values as well as in your skills and experience. Values decide which format of work will feel comfortable to you and last over the long term.

Why the choice of format depends on your values

Values are what truly matters to us: freedom, stability, growth, creativity, a balance between work and personal life. When your format of work matches your values, you feel inspired, burn out less and reach your goals faster. When the choice goes against your inner priorities, even a prestigious position or a high income will not bring satisfaction.

Freelance: the value of freedom and flexibility

Freelance suits people for whom these matter most:

  • freedom to choose projects and clients;
  • a flexible schedule and the chance to work from anywhere in the world;
  • creative self-expression and a variety of tasks.

Keep in mind, though, that freelance often means an irregular income and handling the organisational side yourself: finding clients, taxes, managing your time.

It suits you if your values are independence, freedom and creativity.

Employment: the value of stability and security

Working for an employer remains an attractive choice for people who value:

  • financial stability (a fixed salary, benefits and protections);
  • clear responsibilities and structured processes;
  • career development within a company and working in a team.

Employment gives predictability and a sense of security, but it can limit freedom and creativity.

It suits you if your values are reliability, stability and teamwork.

Business: the value of influence and ambition

People choose their own business when they want:

  • full independence and control over the result;
  • the chance to influence a market, a team, clients;
  • a high income, along with a readiness to take risks.

A business also comes with a great deal of responsibility, uncertainty and the need to make decisions all the time.

It suits you if your values are leadership, ambition and freedom on a larger scale.

How to tell which is closer to you

  1. Make a list of your key values (5-7 items).
  2. Compare them with the characteristics of the three formats: freelance, employment, business.
  3. Ask yourself: "Where will my values be realised most fully?"

This analysis helps you see which way of working will be effective for you and also psychologically comfortable.

When a professional choice rests on an inner foundation, it becomes stable and brings satisfaction.
