Why does a job you dislike drain your energy?

Tiredness often comes from the thought of going to work rather than from the workload itself. Three reasons a job that does not suit you wears you down, and small steps to get some energy back.

Many people notice that their tiredness comes less from the number of tasks and more from the thought of having to go to work again. The day has barely started and the energy is already gone. Why does a job you don't like drain you so much? Part of the answer lies in how you feel while you are doing it, physically as well as emotionally.

1. Your body notices the strain too

When you make yourself do something every day that does not feel right, it can feel like living under constant stress. Many people notice:

  • tension in the shoulders, neck or jaw, and a heavy head by the end of the day;
  • tiredness that does not go away even after a night's sleep;
  • less energy for the things they used to enjoy;
  • weekends that pass without feeling rested.

People often describe it like this: "It feels as if I am going against myself."

If feelings like these last a long time or get worse, talk to a doctor. Career guidance does not replace medical advice.

2. Running on "I have to"

Interest and enjoyment are what should feed your energy at work. When your motivation rests mainly on "I have to" and "I should", your strength goes into resisting instead of growing.

Examples of external motivation:

  • "I have to earn money."
  • "I need to live up to my family's expectations."
  • "That's just how it's done, I can't drop everything."

This kind of motivation can work for a while, but over time it leads to burnout, because your inner battery is never recharged by interest.

3. Inner conflict: the biggest drain

One of the strongest energy drains is a conflict between your values and the reality of your job.

For example:

  • Value: creativity and freedom → Job: strict instructions and control.
  • Value: helping people → Job: dry reports and numbers.
  • Value: growth → Job: monotonous routine tasks.

Every day you go against your own principles, you push yourself a little against your own grain. That is what takes the most energy.

4. How to get your energy back

You don't always have to quit to feel stronger. Sometimes it is enough to start with small steps:

  • Track your triggers. Keep a diary and note the moments when your energy drops.
  • Add small pleasures. Even in a job you dislike you can build in things that recharge you: a walk, music, a conversation.
  • Grow outside the office. Hobbies, sport and learning give back a sense of control and fullness.
  • Revisit your values. Once you understand what matters to you, it becomes easier to see where to go next in your career.

We lose strength because of the mismatch between what we feel inside and what happens around us, as well as because of the volume of tasks. To stop losing energy at work, searching for the "perfect profession" is only part of it. It also helps to become aware of your values and of what brings you joy and meaning. These are what guide you in your career and help you keep your energy.
